My Story

The analog process of making a film photograph from start to finish truly forced me to slow down at a time when I greatly needed it. After moving halfway across the country to Austin, Texas in early 2020, I bought an old (and fully manual) Canon TLb to keep me entertained and be my companion as I got to know a new city. Looking back on it, I made so many mistakes, some of them funny, some of them expensive, and went down countless YouTube rabbit holes while slowly teaching myself everything I could about film photography. I found the delayed gratification for my focused efforts simple but rewarding, and I was drawn to the deep focus that I consistently found myself in during each step of making a film photograph on my old camera. I’ve learned that photography is such a beautiful artistic medium in so many ways, and the intricacies of film helped me understand photography on an entirely new level than I had before. I love everything about film photography: the different film stocks and expired film, old and new gear, and the tight-knit community of photographers that greatly respect and protect this niche medium and keep it alive. I really could talk about it all day. But more than anything, it feels so remarkable to me to have the ability to pause a moment in space and time forever, and each photograph I take feels like another stamp of proof from my perspective that I was here. It feels like I can distinctly remember every single photograph that I take while in that state of focus. So, here’s to making some more photographs and memories!
